Work placement is structured workplace learning that prepares students for the workforce. The experience in the workplace helps students to better understand theory by putting it into practice in the workplace. It is different from work experience in that instead of just observing what goes on, students are given the opportunity to undertake tasks that enable them to develop competencies related to a particular vocational course.

Work placement at Southern Cross Catholic College Burwood (SCCC):

  • involves Year 11 and/or Year 12 students undertaking VET courses as part of a HSC study program
  • is a mandatory component of courses that provide Nationally Recognised Training
  • involves the integration of off-the-job and on-the-job learning
  • involves competency-based assessment of industry-recognised skills and knowledge which is reported through a student workplace journal and report.

Most VET courses at SCCC have a mandatory work placement of 70 hours for each 240 hour VET course or 35 Hours for a 120 hour VET Course. Early Childhood Education and Care and some specialisations courses have additional work placement requirements.

You will be expected to:

  • Start your placement on time each day
  • Take only the allocated time for breaks
  • Contact your workplace supervisor, school workplace team if you are unable to attend your placement
  • Provide a doctor’s certificate if you are absent from work placement
  • Make up the incomplete hours at another time, such as the holidays
  • Be mindful of confidential information
  • View the presentation outlining student expectations around work placement here

Depending on the issue discuss it with your host employer/facilitator or work placement team. For example:

  • Unsafe occupational health and safety practices
  • Inadequate supervision or learning opportunities
  • Unreasonable work requests by the host employer or workplace supervisor
  • Medical conditions

Let your supervising teacher and workplace supervisor know if you suffer from any medical condition or disability that may affect your work performance.

  • Report it to the host employer or workplace supervisor and seek medical help
  • Contact the Work Placement team as soon as possible
  • Complete an Accident Report Form.
  • You are covered by the insurance taken out by Sydney Catholic Schools
  • Make sure you have your Medicare number
  • Keep all the relevant medical certificates and accounts.
